I recently shared my enthusiasm for Lewis Stellar’s zine “I’m Holding You In God’s Chocolate,” which brings diverse and rich imagery to the traditional Quaker practice of “holding in the Light,” a form of prayer.
Lewis was kind enough to answer some questions I had about the making of the zine and to allow me to share that with you.
Natalie: How did you determine that a zine was the right format for this ministry? How has its format informed how the message and imagery have traveled/been shared?
Lewis: The zine format came to me quickly when I realized how important images would be to shairng the message on my heart. I have a lot of friends in anarchist and punk communities, and have always loved the format of zines that is informal, flexible, and highly visual - which fit the bill for a message about the diversity of imagery and practices connected to prayer and spiritual support among Friends. I also wanted the message to be highly shareable and more accessible to younger folks; as a Friend under 30 (at the time... haha), I wanted to be able to share Quakerism with people who wouldn't necessarily read a book, an epistle, or a Pendle Hill Pamphlet.
